GlobalGiving.org is matching all donations to our "Stop Homophobic Bullying in Schools" campaign
Dear Friends,
Most of you already know about our Creating Bias-Free Classrooms program — this unique model has been effective in training teachers to handle homophobia and anti-gay bullying in their classrooms. Last year, we began training administrators, equipping them to build schools where students feel safe, regardless of sexual orientation.
We are passionate about this work and like you, we feel heartbroken at the news of the past month. Throughout September, tragedy after tragedy reminded us of the unnecessary truth: students who are perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender continue to endure horrific levels of harassment in schools across the country.
We know that it is possible to change the conditions that allow homophobic bullying to continue unchecked. We know that it is possible to change student attitudes about difference, to help teachers address harassment and ensure their students feel safe before conflicts escalate.
ENCOMPASS wants to do this work. We have the necessary expertise, we have unique and effective program models to combat homophobia in schools. We have the staff, the experience, the partnerships and strong supporters like you.
What we need now is the funding. The funding to expand our work to new groups of teachers and administrators. The funding to directly impact more schools—and ultimately, their most vulnerable students.
