I attended Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp in 1991, when I was attending Downtown Business Magnet High School. I was one of four students from my school to attend that year after learning about it from a friend, who was a youth leader for the camp at the time. So many parts of my life have been deeply impacted by my time at the Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp - my goals, my interests, my social circle, my social and political views, my career and my family life. The program enriched my life in so many ways that I'm certain that bringing it back would offer a lot to LA youth.

I often wonder where my life would have lead me if I had not attended Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp. Most likely, I would be on a similar path, I just think it might have taken me longer to get there. Although I was already on track towards working on societal justice issues, many of the connections I have today can be traced back to this powerful program. The program provided me with a strong community and social justice foundation.

There are so many things that I got from my experience at Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp, both tangible and intangible. I was lucky enough to meet my partner through the program and years later to start a family. Many of my closest friends and family were involved with the Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp or related programs. I was privileged to work closely with the program for many years - both as a volunteer and a paid employee - watching it impact the lives of thousands of youth.

Thousands of camp alumni and volunteers share my positive feelings about Brotherhood-Sisterhood Camp. I know, because many of them are now my friends and colleagues. I am thankful that I was able to take part in such a life-changing program and I hope that other youth throughout Los Angeles are able to benefit from a similar experience.

Sincerely,

Ben Wright
